Job Summary This paragraph summarizes the general nature, level and purpose of the job.
The Lead Chaplain serves as an expert in their field and holds a pivotal role in advising patients, family members, and guide new staff members.
They create, document, and implement plans for spiritual care services.
They conduct interfaith spiritual assessments and interventions while fostering positive relationships among patients, their families/support groups, doctors, and other healthcare providers.
They represent the department, actively engage in house-wide committees and patient/family care conferences and provide assistance with managerial and administrative tasks as necessary to support the department manager.
Essential Functions The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification.

Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements including but not limited to sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patient rights and ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings.
Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.
Provides interfaith spiritual assessment and interventions which enables patients, family members, visitors, and staff to draw upon their own cultural, spiritual, and religious resources.
Serves as staff person on and coordinates care with multi-disciplinary teams for designated patient units and groups.
Ensures appropriate spiritual care assessment and intervention for patients, family, and visitors.
Performs special spiritual services (baptisms, memorials, etc.
) requested of the Spiritual Care Service and as appropriate to his/her professional functioning.
Provides Internal and external teaching and outreach on spiritual care topics.
Coordinates care with other Chaplains, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students, guest services, and volunteers, and, as time permits, medical and genetics counseling students.
Participates in research activities undertaken by Spiritual Care Service.
Serves as a liaison to area faith communities/ congregations as requested.
Performs specialized duties specific to their particular role, such as: serving on specialized committees, performing particular religious functions/services, and/or coordinating volunteers.
(Example: Scwartz Rounds; Ethics, Palliative Care).
Precepting new hires to the department.
Providing orientations, didactics and in-services to other departments or medical school residents/ fellows.
Mentoring Chaplain Fellows, as assigned.
Assisting with administrative and department leadership in support of department manager when needed/ requested.
Develop and document special spiritual services training.
Identify, evaluate and resolve standard problems within department.
Assessing sensitive issue while directing and prioritizing work for Chaplains.
Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
Education: Master's degree in spirituality, religious studies or theology, or equivalent as approved by professional chaplain certifying organization.
Experience: Three (3) years of directly related work experience.
License / Certification: Must have Professional Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) by the APC, ACPE, NACC, NAJC, or equivalent certifying body and be a member in good standing.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people.
Empathetic and compassionate nature, with the ability to provide emotional support in sensitive situations.
Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Excellent organizational skills and the capability to manage multiple responsibilities.
Demonstrated leadership experience, including mentoring or supervising staff.
Adherence to ethical guidelines and a strong commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
Flexibility to work non-traditional hours and participate in on-call rotations, as required.
