Our 6 human, 1-pup intentional community house in the Berkeley Hills is looking for two new people to replace two outgoing housemates.
It could be you (two)! Each room is $1250/month.
Utilities are approximately $150/mo pp plus another $250 or so for shared groceries.
Available around January 1.
About Us
Hi! We are an intentional community of six humans, one canine, and lots of trees! We are passionate about learning / unlearning / co-creating ways of being together and apart during these uncertain times.
For us, community means that we are making an active choice to share our space and lives together.
We question dominant forms of life-making, including nuclear family structures.
We share food, ideas, heartbreaks, laughter, and frustrations.
We strive for integrity with ourselves and one another, trying to make space for healthier forms of conflict, play, silliness, and grief.
We also really respect our alone time.
We all have unique passions including: collective liberation, event production, civil rights work, decolonial endeavors, healthcare, plant medicine, music, writing, immersive theater, rewilding, play, dance, and technology in various forms.
We include non-monogamous, queer, cis, non-cis, white, white-passing, immigrant, undocumented, American, sex-positive folx who welcome all kinds of people on the spectrum of being human.
We would particularly encourage people to apply who may have intersections of identities which make it hard to find a place to live.
We have a variety of dietary preferences and restrictions that are happily accommodated.
We use the space regularly for performance salons, open gathering space for local communities in search of free space, art-making events, and the occasional salacious party 😉
About You
We are looking for community members who feel aligned with our values and are inspired by the ideals of communal living, and who will stick around when it’s time to do the dishes.
Are you excited to cook a family dinner? To host a salon? To jam out in the music room? To join for impromptu yoga sessions on the deck? For meaningful conversations? For sharing your creative endeavors? For being there for one another? For sharing moments of your life with a group of people who are trying to live in joy amongst uncertainty? Great.
Us too.
Living communally can be wonderful and it can occasionally be challenging.
We’re looking for people who work to be good, compassionate communicators, and who know how to resolve conflicts gracefully when necessary.
We meet every other week for community dinner/cleaning followed by a house meeting.
As mentioned, many of us are queer and/or ethically non-monogamous.
We engage with these identities openly and frequently, and you will likely interact with people’s same-sex, nonbinary, and/or additional partners.
Please only apply if you’re enthusiastic about being part of a community that embraces these things.
About The Rooms
Both rooms are of a similar size (about 125 square feet), with spacious windows looking out onto our redwood grove and the bay! Each room has a closet, and they share an adjacent bathroom.
We’d prefer to find the right roommates rather than charge the highest price, and want to make sure we keep housing accessible to folks across different income groups.
Please let us know if you’d like to talk about need-based accommodations.
About the House
We’re on Grizzly Peak Blvd near Marin Avenue.
We are 1 block from the 65 bus stop (~15 min to Downtown Berkeley BART), one block to Tilden through a designated footpath in the backyard.
It’s a short 10 minute drive to University Ave and the UC Berkeley Campus.
There are 4 west-facing balconies, with incredible views of the entire Bay, and the house gets amazing light throughout the day with beautiful views of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the North Bay.
With two separate living rooms, six bedrooms, four full baths and 1 half bath, a large outdoor space for planting, a big eat-in collaborative kitchen, and a bonus flex space (detached garage and flex space for work/games/etc.
), there is plenty of space for community, art, and privacy.
Accessibility notes: our house is at the top of a very steep hill, and it has a lot of stairs.
It is likely not a good fit for people with mobility issues.
We are near a bus stop, but you will probably want access to a car or some kind of powered vehicle, even if it’s just an e-bike.
There is limited parking in the driveway and plenty of street parking if those spots are taken.
Food & Household Goods
We split costs for the majority of house goods like groceries, vegetables, cleaning supplies, etc, but also respect that folks may have their own beloved foods or items that they’d like to keep for themselves.
We usually cook vegetarian/vegan food at home, but meat is OK too.
How We Covid
Like most things in our home, COVID safety is fluid and in process.
We are currently back to hosting unmasked parties and events and we don’t typically require rapid testing.
We may become more or less strict (hopefully less) as the world changes.
Folks typically mask while cooking or in communal spaces if they have active infections (cold, flu, etc) to prevent others from getting sick.
Logistics
• Parking is free.
There are 4 spots in the driveway (first come, first served), and plenty of street parking if those aren’t available
• The rooms are available starting on December 26, but move-in dates are flexible!
• We have a nice new washer and dryer and they’re free to use
• Utilities are approximately $150/mo plus another $250 or so for shared groceries
• We have one friendly dog named Mercury.
At this time, we’re not open to adding more dogs or cats, but other community-friendly pets may be welcome!
• Substance-friendly, but cigarette smoking is restricted to the driveway, away from the house
Thanks so much, and we look forward to meeting you!
