Our rapid growth and breadth of accounts translates into exciting opportunities for our people! Job Summary The Fellow position is an entry level position for recent college graduates within Bon Appetit.
The Fellow will be assigned to a region with multiple café’s, with a primary focus on raising awareness about social and environmental issues related to the food system for guests and employees in their region.
Fellowships are intended as an opportunity for recent college graduates of campuses that are served by Bon Appetit, in order to continue learning and promoting sustainability within the food service industry.
A fellow is considered a resource for Bon Appétit chefs, managers, and guests interested in understanding and strengthening sustainability-related programs and/or launching new initiatives in their cafes.
Duties include engaging creatively with communities where Bon Appetit cafes exist, generating interest in food and sustainability challenges, and communicating Bon Appétit policies through farm visits, guest lectures, educational events and assistance with the implementation of sustainability-related programs.
Fellows will perform research or manage projects on multiple Bon Appetit college campuses to help maintain the company’s position as a leader in sustainability.
Assigned projects for Fellows are constantly changing and involve a focus on innovative and diverse topics such as reducing food waste, defining fair farm labor, creating a network of student gardeners and farmers at colleges around the country, providing support and resources to students interested in running the Real Food Calculator, and starting food recovery programs.
The position is generally a one year position with the possibility of a second year by mutual agreement.
The chosen applicant will work remotely from their choice on a short list of locations within their assigned region, including Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Atlanta.
Objectives In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to conform to the following: · Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.
· Interact professionally with other employees, managers, clients, customers and suppliers.
· Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.
· Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
MAJOR DUTIES/FUNCTIONS/TASKS: · Visit café’s within the assigned region and work on plans to engage the community and the café teams in discussions about social and environmental issues with the food system.
Work with a flexible calendar and schedule campus visits to fit each fellows’ preference for interaction style, interests and approach, that include classroom visits, farm visits, presentations, and student group meetings; · Special projects, as assigned, to further current or potential sustainability commitments and initiatives, such as Farm to Fork, waste reduction and prevention, campus farms and gardens, and animal welfare commitments; · Write and edit communications materials, including blog posts and articles for BRAVO, about activities hosted on campus visits, Farm to Fork vendor visits, and other activities or projects undertaken in the role; and · Responsible for administrative duties such as expense reports, Pcard reconciliation reports and other administrative tasks as needed.

· A 4-year college degree in Environmental Science, Public Health, Communications or related area; or a 4-year college degree in another area, with strong experience in food systems, sustainability, food service, etc.
· Past attendance at a college or university where Bon Appetit managed the food; · In lieu of a degree, a 4-6 years of combined education and work experience is required.
· A strong track record of interest and experience working on sustainable food and agriculture issues; · Knowledge of public health, environmental and social issues related to food and agriculture; · Strong organizational skills with great attention to detail and ability to manage multiple and competing priorities; · Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including comfort speaking publicly and with the media; · Self-starter with ability to work independently and collaboratively; · Ability to think critically and to effectively deal with unique challenges as they arise; · Ability to spend up to 80% of time traveling and work independently and from home when not traveling; flexible schedule to include occasional evenings and weekends; and · Familiarity with the food service or restaurant industry preferred.
