San Mateo County Health's Community Health Promotion Unit is seeking an experienced Tobacco Prevention Program Specialist II.
The Tobacco Prevention Program Specialist (TPPS), under general supervision, performs a variety of technical tasks and community development work related to the planning, implementation and coordination of community service delivery programs; makes programmatic decisions, establishes basic programmatic policies and coordinates functions with other program areas, and performs related work as required.
There is currently one regular vacancy is in the Community Health Promotion Unit (CHPU) in the Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Division, located in Belmont, but travels/drives throughout San Mateo County and occasionally to Sacramento to conduct or attend trainings, conduct site visits, and attend various meetings.
Primary responsibilities: Role of coalition and community engagement coordinator.
Coordinate the day-to-day functions of the San Mateo County Tobacco Education Coalition.
Broaden community engagement in tobacco control efforts and recruit for a diverse San Mateo County Tobacco Education Coalition membership.
Develop/update an orientation process for new Coalition members and train adult (and youth if applicable) Coalition members.
Schedule Coalition meetings and arrange meeting logistics.
Coordinate with Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) funded agencies and other partners to prevent tobacco use by youth.
The TPPS works as part of a diverse team that includes staff with expertise in health education, community capacity building, and policy development and advocacy.
Under general supervision of the Tobacco Prevention Program (TPP) project director, coordinates the day-to-day functions of program.
Additional duties include developing an outreach plan; conducting community health education presentations; providing training and technical assistance to community residents; assisting in the development of program work plans, contract documents, budgets and reports; coordinating the program materials; and data management.
The ideal candidate will be experienced in coalition building; conducting tobacco prevention activities and community engagement; have working knowledge of the social determinants of health and health inequities that impact chronic diseases; have independently performed in one or several specialized areas such as community health program planning, program evaluation, program coordination, contract management, partnership development, research and development or community health presentations.
Experience in community capacity building and developing strategies that address the social determinants of health that impact chronic diseases preferred.
Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.

Interpret rules, regulations and guidelines at all government levels.
Compile, analyze and interpret data using statistical and research techniques.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with members of other departments and diverse community groups.
Plan, organize, promote and coordinate diverse community program activities.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to qualify is: Community Program Specialist II: Four years of experience in an organization providing social services which has included responsibility for community service program development such as planning, evaluating, monitoring or coordinating projects.
