Up for sale is my 2001 BMW 540i M-sport 6-speed manual with 130k miles.
I’ve owned this car for 7 years and it’s been an amazing daily driver for a number of years until I purchased some other BMWs to rotate through.
Over that period, I put 30k miles on the car and performed a decent amount of maintenance, some myself, but the majority through some reputable BMW shops in the Bay Area.
If you know about what the 540i is, then you know what you’re looking at.
If not, then it can be summarized as the “poor-man’s M5”.
You get 90% of the legendary e39 M5 performance, for only 30% of the cost of an M5.
It has 324 ft-lbs of torque which is only about 30 ft-lbs of torque less than the M5 and really feels powerful at low RPM.
The Good:
-The 4.
4L V8 is strong and reliable and hasn’t let me down
-6-speed manual is rare and more fun to drive
-130k miles - low mileage for it’s age
-Clean Title
-M-Sport bumpers, 3-spoke steering, Rear M5 style lip spoiler
-Fold Down Rear Seats w/ Ski Bag
-Park Distance Control
-No accidents during my ownership (and none from what I know, but you can pull a Carfax report)
-UUC short-throw shifter with DSSR
-Super rare real BBS RC 300 Wheels (worth $2k+) with Michelin PIlot Sport 4S tires with plenty of grip left
-Paint matched e36 M3 side mirrors with dual-mirror split (wide angle/regular)
-Aftermarket speaker system (Focal tweeters, Alpine amp and subwoofer) + Grom Audio Bluetooth adapter maintains OEM look and replaces CD changes.
-Straight-piped cat-back exhaust sounds great under load, but quiet when cruising (no issue with Smog)
-Full size wheel spare in the trunk
-Recently passed Smog without issue for registration (more than 90 days ago)
-Bentley service manuals, volume one & volume two included in sale
-2 key fobs + valet key
-All maintenance paper records available from my ownership and prior
Repairs under my ownership:
-Door Lock Actuator driver’s door
-Driver's door latch
-Center Tie Rod Assembly
-Cabin Filter 2
-Hawkeye Elite Alignment
-UUC Short Shifter + DSSR
-Oil and Filter Change
-Clutch Delay Valve Delete and Clutch Fluid Refill
-Replaced Radiator Reserve Tank
-Replaced Drive Belts
-Replaced Windshield washer hose
-Replaced Alternator
The not so Good:
-Some paint chips from regular driving (and neighbors kids opening their car door into mine)
-Paint fade on the roof from the sun
-Clutch starting to slip and should probably should be replaced
-Typical BMW oil leaks… nothing too urgent
-Windshield has a couple of small rock chips on the passenger side- appears to be the original windshield
-The rubber trim on the windshields is tired
-One rear quarter window sun visor won’t retract - you can easily disassemble and replace
-1 rear door lock actuator probably should be replaced - it’s a bit sluggish
-One reverse light is out
-Minor curbing on one or two wheels
It’s not a perfect car, but what can you expect for something that’s 23 years old? This could be a great foundation for someone’s first project car if you want to fix up the mechanical or esthetic side of things.
Or you could turn it into an autocross car, and while it’s not lightweight, it handles amazingly.
I just replaced the BMW hood emblem, rear door sill trims and got it detailed.
The interior is in great condition.
I’ve tried to be transparent in this listing, so please don’t waste my time with low-ball offers.
Selling as-is.
Will not part out.
Price is negotiable within reason.
Will accept cash or cashier's check deposited together at Chase bank.
No test drives without proof of funds.
Open to trades for something interesting (ex: 330ci convertible ZHP 6-speed, Cooper JCW, 300zx TT, e46 M3, e39 m5, etc.
)
Thank you,
Dan
