SLAC Job Postings Position overview: SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a Control Systems Engineer to support the Instrumentation and Controls Division in the Facilities & Operations Directorate.
The Instrumentation and Controls Division is responsible for the engineering controls for all facilities and accelerator support systems throughout SLAC.
The Control Systems Engineer will design, develop, upgrade, configure, build, commission, test and maintain Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Utility Controls, HVAC and Lighting Controls, Sustainability including software real-time control, data acquisition, and monitoring systems.
The Control System Engineer will support the efforts of Associate Engineers and Technicians within the Department, collaborate with Engineers within the F&O Directorate, and interact with other SLAC departments, DOE labs, and the international accelerator community.
This position reports to the Instrumentation & Controls System Manager within the Instrumentation and Controls Division in the F&O Directorate of SLAC.
In addition, today SLAC and F&O Division has current infrastructure project investments allocated to AI/ML.
F&O sees tremendous opportunities for an I&C Controls Engineer to be part a collaborate team that will integrate data collection, instrumentation, and controls in utilities infrastructure projects to enable future applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) for science.
Your specific responsibilities include: Provide technical and engineering support for the industrial and utility grade control systems including but not limited to Cooling Towers, Process Cooling Water, Electrical Power Systems Controls and instrumentation, Sanitary and Storm Lift stations, Pneumatic Controls including CDA, Lab Grade gases like Nitrogen and Helium.
Serve as the Lighting Controls SME and occasional HVAC Controls Engineer support.
Additionally, support Sustainability program by creating energy dashboards to support sustainability goals.
Specifically gather meter data that exist on various computing platforms to display and log on the Instrumentation group data platform.
Create visual display and trend graphics that enable users such as building managers and engineers to detect anomalies and inefficiencies.
Create time series data download reports.
Manage the full control systems lifecycle through a system engineering approach, this includes set requirements, specifications, design, implementation, test, integration, commissioning, documentation, graphical user interfaces (GUIs).
This position has a multi-disciplinary role, teaming with software and hardware engineers, accelerator physicists, operators, and project managers alike.
Maintain and enhance existing Controls subsystems in their production environment.
Perform troubleshooting, diagnostics analysis and provide corrective action proactively.
Configure and write SCADA software control applications and user interfaces.
Write, produce, and maintain architectural, and design documentation.
Design and develop new control software, including software interfaces to hardware.
Manage projects, with authority on scope, cost, schedule and risks; manage project teams.
Maintain compliance and provide stewardship of SLAC’s regulations, policies and standards Provide day-to-day operational support.
Work collaboratively with other team members and management.
Responsible for occasional 24/7 support for subsystems assigned.
Collaborate with and direct the work of coordinators, designers, technicians, and maintenance personnel.
To be successful in this position you will bring: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or related field and minimum 5 years’ experience including: Software development and/or industrial process controls and/or HVAC controls and Lighting Controls.
High-level expertise with PLC configuration, programming and debugging.
Demonstrated experience with field buses, such as Ethernet, Modbus, MQTT and REST APIs.
Configuration of controls networks including, Field bus Networks (ProfiNet, DeviceNet, Ethernet/IP, Safety rated field bus networks), Serial communication (RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, ProfiBus, BacNet) between PLC;s and instruments and microcontrollers.
SCADA systems such as Ignition, Wonderware, Webctrl and Honeywell but not limited too.
Scripting languages such as C/C++, java, Python.
Proficiency in database systems MSSQL, MySQL, Access, PostgreSQL etc.
Distributed data acquisition and client/server models.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to quickly learn new technologies.
Track records of successful project management experience.
Must be pro-active, hands-on, and capable of understanding the system in its entirety, and comfortable with both hardware and software components.
Strong problem-solving skills, independent decision making, and ability to work in a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.
Must possess excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
Highly organized, good interpersonal skills and strong communication skills, both oral and written.
Experience building and/or working as part of a collaborative team.

In addition, preferred requirements include: User software and Network support.
Specify and maintain, integrate, test, troubleshoot and debug, model and implementation of AI/ML-based software.
Real-time and networking software.
Requirement and design specifications creation.
Experienced with EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) software tool and application used in a particle accelerators, telescopes and other large scientific facilities is plus.
Proficiency programming and tuning variable frequency drives is a plus.
Web development and languages, JavaScript, node.

Distributed Antennas System (Radio) a plus.
