SLAC Job Postings ¿¿¿¿¿¿Position Overview SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Environmental, Safety & Health (ESH) Division’s Environmental Protection Department is seeking an Environmental Engineer to be a program manager/subject matter expert within SLAC’s Environmental Compliance Group.
This position will be responsible for managing one or more compliance programs for the SLAC facility and supporting other compliance programs as needed, including but not limited to air quality, storm water, industrial wastewater, tiered permitting, environmental management systems (EMS), pollution prevention, EPRCRA 313/TRI, waste reduction for non-hazardous waste/zero waste program, spill reporting, and SPCC.
Candidates with experience in federal, California state, and local environmental compliance programs are preferred, and experience in CARB and BAAQMD air quality regulations is desirable.
SLAC builds and operates multiple revolutionary science and experimental facilities, several of which are unmatched in power, scale, and capability.

Specific duties may include but not be limited to managing existing permits, preparing new permit applications as needed, managing permit requirements, preparing regulatory report deliverables, analyzing data, interfacing with regulatory agencies, peer reviewing other’s work, reviewing project plans and specifications to ensure compliance, partnering with site staff in environmental regulatory matters, conducting assessments and onsite inspections, developing/continually improving policy, procedures, training and outreach materials for environmental compliance programs at SLAC.
Occasional field work may be required including source/site inspections, and assisting with waste/stormwater, soil, and sediment sampling as needed, as well as occasional but infrequent off-hours consultation as SLAC operates 24/7.
Your responsibilities include: Under minimal supervision, perform moderately complex technical work in the disciplines described above to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with the university's environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements.
Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees, the environment, and the community.
Act as a lead or technical expert, providing functional direction and training in the overall application of health and safety programs.
Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures; prepare accompanying management reports, documentation, and evaluations.
Monitor and prevent potential hazards and unsafe conditions that could be present in the work area.
Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place.
Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the hazard potential.
May lead a team responsible for developing and implementing environmental and/or safety programs.
To be successful in this position you will bring: Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and seven years progressively responsible experience in environmental engineering/science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Master’s degree is desirable.
Demonstrated ability to conduct effective environmental surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessments, and most complex data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
Knowledge of regulatory requirements for air quality, water quality, EMS, zero waste, cultural, ecological aspects, tiered permitting, NEPA, and spill reporting/SPCC, is strongly preferred.
Certifications and Licenses: California PE is desirable.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
