SLAC Job Postings Position overview: The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Light Source (SSRL), a directorate of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, is a national user facility providing synchrotron radiation for research in biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, material science, medicine, and physics.
SSRL operates and maintains synchrotron radiation beam lines a 3GeV electron storage ring SPEAR3 and the associated injector facility.
The SSRL SMB Macromolecular Crystallography Department (SMB-MC) is responsible for the operation and development of highly automated SSRL beam lines dedicated to macromolecular structure determination supporting fundamental research in the biosciences and applied biomedical, bioproducts and biofuels related research.
We are seeking a Master Science & Engineering Technician to lead and support the beamline equipment and automation which includes motion control, instrument control, robotics, signal processing, safety systems, high-precision positioning systems, cryogenics and x-ray and optical detector systems.
The Master Technician will demonstrate a highly developed sense of electronics and controls systems knowledge and practical experience in instrument design, troubleshooting, assembly and operation.
The Master Technician is skilled in drawing interpretation and hardware installation; demonstrates strong work ethics and attention to detail.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Perform diverse and complex electronics-related projects working independently of technical supervision other than infrequent interactions with engineering and/or scientific staff.
Lead and support manual production, analysis, planning and/or routine design work, along with more typical S&EA-type work.
¿ Perform expert level, complex technical work requiring cross discipline expertise.
Participate in design meetings with electronics engineers and project scientists and provide input on form factors, compatibility with existing infrastructure and develop implementation plans.
Utilize an expansive array of tools and equipment with expert level skill, precision, creativity, and independence in complex applications.
Working from schematics and other documents, independently determine and specify all components, design and layout hardware chassis using panel design software, procure and/or coordinate the fabrication of chassis components, construct PC boards, assemble chassis, design cable runs, install complete systems on the beamline and run preliminary diagnostic tests and work with engineers and project scientists on testing full functionality of complete systems.
Conduct advanced level calculations of parameters relevant to component, circuit, instrument, or system performance for design, calibration, test, or debug purposes.
Lead simple and complex electronics projects which will include participating in design meetings with engineers and project scientists to guide the practical application of engineering principals.
Keep associated workers on track with project priorities and keep project engineers and scientists apprised of the status of each project.
Communicate project status to stake holders Independently resolve unanticipated technical issues and recommend improvements to enhance system or project performance.
Results are reviewed for conformance to project deliverables.
¿ Compose clear, comprehensive technical resorts that document project results or status, communicate deficiencies, as built deviations from design, and opportunities for improvement.
Train and direct other electronics technicians working within the SMB group as well as in external groups at SSRL and LCLS.
Train staff on the use of laboratory equipment.
Post proper MSDS forms for chemicals stored or used in the laboratory.
Oversee work of others that use the laboratory ensuring that applicable ATAs, SOPs, and standard manufacturing rules are being followed.
Lead and support a range of technical work supported by the SMB electronics laboratory.
Inspect and test PC Boards, completed electronics units, and cabling including systems completed by other technicians.
Perform quality control as well as electrical, soldering and assembly inspections using various testers, DVM and other equipment.
Test cables using specialized cable test equipment and software.
Re-work and troubleshoot SMT and other PC boards using various soldering/de-soldering tools.
Independently trouble-shoot beamline electronics equipment and components.
Correct documentation including reverse engineering if required.
Provide feedback to engineers and scientists on best practices and/or improvements and keep all beam line project assembly, cabling and wiring documentation in order.
May perform any of the duties described in the Principal Science & Engineering Technician specification or other duties as assigned.
Typical duties include those of the Principal S&E Technician level, but with expanded scope, complexity, technical expertise and diversity, impact, and independence.

Must have in-depth electronics expertise in multiple areas (e.
g.
, the design, assembly, implementation and testing of highly specialized x-ray beamline motion control systems, programmable logic controllers, environmental controls, safety systems and high-speed detector systems).
Ability work on advanced level calculations on various parameters relevant to component, equipment, or system design.
Demonstrated ability to diagnose and understand system performance deficiencies and recommend improvements to scientific and engineering staff.
Demonstrated ability to compose clear, comprehensive technical reports that document status, performance deficiencies, as built deviations from design, and opportunities for improvements.
Demonstrated ability to organize and lead a multi-disciplinary team of technicians in the execution of a complex project including independently resolving unanticipated technical issues safely and efficiently.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
