SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION: The Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research (VPDoR) provides guidance and support to facilitate, nurture and safeguard a thriving research ecosystem at Stanford.
To this end, the VPDoR assumes dual roles.
As cognizant Dean for the independent academic units, the VPDoR oversees the program scope and resources for the fifteen multi-disciplinary and independent laboratories, centers, and institutes.
As Vice Provost and the University’s Senior Research Officer, the VPDoR recommends and promulgates new research-related policies and oversees their implementation; and manages the mission-support offices that provide services of research compliance and administration, health and safety, and technology transfer to Stanford’s research enterprise.

POSITION SUMMARY: The office of VPDoR is seeking an Associate Vice Provost, Research Policy and Integrity (AVP) to lead the development, promulgation, and implementation of Stanford’s policies and procedures to: support researchers to do their best research while protecting the university, researchers themselves, and research participants; ease researchers’ burden in understanding and meeting compliance obligations; and enhance administrators’ knowledge and skill in monitoring risk and supporting faculty.
The AVP will also act as the Research Integrity Officer (RIO) for the VPDoR, responsible for promoting and assuring ethical conduct of research across the university.
The RIO will handle allegations of scientific, research and/or other scholarly research misconduct, manage inquiry and investigative process, and respond to allegations of research misconduct.
Reporting directly to the Vice Provost and Dean of Research, the AVP will have four direct reports and lead a team of approximately 10 people across policy and compliance areas in - Responsible conduct of research Conflict of commitment and conflict of interest Research security, including export controls and foreign influence Data privacy and security The position will be based on Stanford's main campus and could be considered for an option of hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational need.

CORE DUTIES: Lead the ongoing development, revision, communication, and implementation of Stanford’s research policies.
Assess the university’s needs related to research compliance; recommend strategies, approaches, and tools necessary to promote research compliance and protect researchers.
Coordinate institution-wide initiatives to prevent, detect, and respond appropriately to research compliance risks.
Collaborate with administrators and research compliance staff in the departments, the independent research units, SLAC, and the seven Schools (Medicine, Engineering, Sustainability, Law, Business, Education, and Humanities and Sciences) to implement and continually improve research compliance programs, to clarify roles and responsibilities, and to monitor research compliance.
Oversee and promote training related to compliance and responsible conduct of research for faculty, key personnel on sponsored projects, and trainees.
Foster a culture of ethics and integrity in research.
Develop, implement, and monitor a communication and education strategy regarding research compliance issues.
Monitor changes in the regulatory landscape, assess the impacts of those changes for Stanford, and communicate outcomes of those assessments in a timely manner to faculty and administrators.
Lead working groups and committees to address escalated research compliance issues.
Lead investigations of non-compliance or research integrity in collaboration with schools and other business units.
Lead coordination with inquiries and investigations relating to allegations of scientific misconduct.
Fulfill these responsibilities in collaboration with other central units, including the Research Compliance Office, the Office of Technology Licensing, the Office of Research Administration, the Office of Risk Management, and the Office of the General Counsel.
Effectively supervise, mentor, and coach professional staff who are subject matter experts in research policy and integrity.
Strategize with the Vice Provost and Dean of Research and the Government Relations staff regarding compliance with policies and requirements of the federal government, state governments, and foundations.
Advise and seek guidance from the members of the Faculty Senate Committee on Research (C-Res).
Deliver presentations at local and regional meetings on research policies, the mitigation of research risk, and related topics.
Represent Stanford as needed in discussions and negotiations with government agencies.
Serve as subject matter expert in research policy and compliance, and perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience: An advanced degree in law, science, engineering, medicine and at least ten years of relevant experience in complex research and/or regulatory environment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: An exemplary track record of integrity.
Experience in research compliance, administration, and program development and implementation.
Sound knowledge of federal regulations pertaining to research.
Ability to interpret and explain federal regulations to a broad range of audiences within the University.
Excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills, and conflict management skills.
Ability to work with faculty.
Proven ability to motivate, engage, and develop a team.
Strong organizational, analytical, and project management skills.
Ability to develop educational programs for faculty and staff.
Demonstrated experience at building consensus among diverse constituencies.
Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and confidentially with difficult situations and with individuals who serve in a broad range of positions within the academic environment.
Expertise in conflict of interest, research security, human and animal subject in research, research data governance, and sponsored project compliance preferred.
Hybrid or on-site arrangements: The expected pay range for this position is $279,100 to $380,000 per annum.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
