The District Attorney’s Office’s Bureau of Investigation is a division within the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office comprised of sworn peace officers who work in two divisions, the Criminal Operations Division, and the Special Operations Division.
District Attorney Inspectors conduct a wide variety of specialized investigations including but not limited to: Officer involved shootings and critical incidents Homicides Political corruption and conflicts of interest Parental child abductions High tech and electronic crimes Real estate fraud Elder abuse and fraud Insurance fraud As part of their duties, District Attorney Inspectors: Assist other law enforcement agencies with major investigations Initiate and complete their own investigations Interview suspects and witnesses Make arrests Write and serve search warrants Prepare reports Conduct searches for fugitives and witnesses Issue and serve subpoenas Appear as a witness in court The ideal candidate will have: Two years of experience in the investigation of serious, sensitive, and complex investigations Experience with homicides and officer involved critical incidents Understanding of complex fraud and financial crimes Ability to conduct thorough, well-documented criminal investigations Experience in investigations with sexual assault and domestic violence Working knowledge of neglect and physical abuse of vulnerable victims Understanding of the role of the District Attorney’s Office in the criminal justice domain, as well as the unique powers and obligations of the District Attorney Inspector Ability to successfully liaise with other law enforcement offices, District Attorney’s Offices, and community organizations as needed Knowledge of Miranda and its lawful application when interviewing suspects and best practices for investigative techniques Ability to question victims, witnesses, and suspects effectively and lawfully Candidates who have worked for another public agency will have an excellent opportunity to enhance their retirement benefits with the County's own retirement system, The County of San Mateo Employee's Retirement Association (SamCERA).

Career Incentive: Employees holding permanent status may be eligible to receive an incentive equating to 2.
5% of base pay in addition to all other compensation for possession of the Intermediate Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Certificate, or an incentive equating up to 7.
5% of base pay for the Advanced POST Certificate.
The maximum allowable certification differential is 7.

Qualifications Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to qualify is: Two years of experience in criminal investigations with a governmental law enforcement agency.
Licensure/Certification: Possession of a Basic Certificate in Law Enforcement issued by the State of California, Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training at the time of appointment.
Knowledge of: Modern techniques and practices of criminal investigation.
The extent of authority of the District Attorney's Office.
Care and use of small firearms.
Rules of evidence and court procedures.
The Penal, Civil and Welfare and Institutions Codes.
Techniques of identifying, preserving and presenting evidence.
Laws of arrest, search and seizure, service of legal process and the legal rights of citizens.
Skill/Ability to: Conduct criminal investigations.
Gather, analyze, correlate and evaluate observed facts and evidence.
Make recommendations and decisions based on logical conclusions.
Question victims, witnesses and suspects effectively and fruitfully.
Analyze situations, appraise people and adopt effective courses of action as necessary.
Act independently and using initiative.
Other Requirements: Refrain from using tobacco products at any time for employees hired by the County after October 1, 2004.
