Works directly with EPRI staff and may have independent interactions with members and industry.
Key Responsibilities and Requirements: -Performs advanced analysis with minimal direction and supervision.
-Conducts technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team.
-Conducts independent research and begins to manage small, less complex projects with minimal support from technical leads.
-Provides technical advice and counsel to other professionals within EPRI.
-Reviews progress and evaluates results.
-Makes changes in methods, design or equipment where necessary.
-Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.
Additional Requirements: -Develops relationships with program advisors.
-Assists technical leads and managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations.
-Presents at external conferences and meetings on technical work.
-Starts working across EPRI programs and developing relationships with other program technical teams.

Additional Job Information: Job Description EPRI’s DERMS team is seeking to fill a Sr Research Scientist position to lead research on emerging technologies in the smart grid including smart inverters, DER Management Systems and Microgrid Controls.
Job Responsibilities: • Develop solutions to complex problems on the topic of control and optimization in DER control systems including DERMS and microgrid controllers.
• Simulate and test controls and optimization algorithms for management of solar PV, battery storage, EV and load.
• Develop control techniques for DER control systems – DERMS, Microgrid controllers, Grid-Edge Gateways • Implement, configure and test DER communication protocols (CIM, SunSpec, DNP3, IEEE 2030.
5) • Plan, monitor and provide project administrative, technical, and business leadership for multiple R&D projects from planning through completion.
• Coordinate and disseminate project information to project stakeholders and monitor and report on the achievement of project activities on behalf of the project or program managers • Communicate highly complex ideas with credibility, confidence, and clarity to diverse audiences through technical publications/papers and making presentations.
• Writing crisp and clear emails that put a course of action on strong technical footing; experience drafting research proposals • Reviews progress and evaluates results.

• Demonstrated technical knowledge of solar PV, inverters, energy storage, conventional generation, and other DER control systems • Strong foundation on control systems theory • Experience with Model Predictive Control (MPC), state estimation, and simulation environments.
Understanding of numerical optimization algorithms and experience with optimization solvers • Proficient programming in at least one of the following languages: Python, Java, C/C++/C# • Familiarity with Inverter-based DER standards and capabilities (IEEE 1547) • DERMS marketplace familiarity - involved companies, available products, trends • Familiarity with distribution system operations and grid services • Project management experience • Good verbal and written communication skills • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams distributed geographically The salary range for this position is $96,985 USD to $131,215 USD annually.
This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.
This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program.
The amount of incentive varies and is subject to the terms and conditions of the plan.
