Salary: $80,000 - $90,000 per year, depending on experience

Who we are: Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) is a local, private, non-profit charitable organization dedicated to animal welfare.

PHS/SPCA is truly an open admission shelter, not only accepting many pet animals who might be refused at other shelters, but also taking care of injured and orphaned native wildlife from San Francisco through San Mateo and the northern half of Santa Clara County.

Who you are: Someone that truly believes in animal welfare and ethical animal rehabilitation.
You are creative and enjoy identifying and developing opportunities via media relations, marketing and public relations to generate awareness, increase community engagement/support, enhance our image/programs and strengthen the organizational brand.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties include the following (other duties may be assigned):
• Proactively identify, develop and communicate PHS/SPCA programs, animal stories and events to the media.
• Respond to media (and public) inquires in a timely fashion.
• Cultivate positive relationships with media contacts.
• Maintain PR crisis media strategies.
• Serve as organization’s spokesperson and represent PHS/SPCA on camera.
This may include weekend commitments and occasional non-traditional hours.
• Field inquiries and requests from external partners when they present opportunities to generate positive awareness and cultivate engagement.
• Act as lead writer and editor for PHS/SPCA – press releases, newsletters, collateral, web content, newspaper columns, flyers, event/promo blurbs, grants, etc.
• Maintain consistent image, messaging and logo usage.
• Responsible for quarterly newsletter – writing, editing, graphics, printing, mailing, distributing, etc.
• Deliver presentations to groups in the community (at their location or at the shelter).
• Drive the PR for in shelter events.
• Draft and maintain a department budget.
• Direct and manage volunteer photographers and videographers.
• Responsible for coordinating most of the organization’s graphic and printing projects.

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university, or three years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Knowledge of WordPress or willingness to learn it.
• Ability to handle multiple projects and work independently is a must.
• Possess strong communication skills, verbally and written.
Ability to write routine reports, newsletters, and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedures manuals, and a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Professional, enthusiastic and positive demeanor.
• Ability to provide positive and constructive feedback to staff, as well as receiving feedback.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate ratio and percentages.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Possess a valid CA driver’s license with a satisfactory record to be insured by our insurance company.
• Upon hire, must complete a background check.
