SLAC Job Postings Position overview: The Facilities & Operations Division is a service organization committed to the support and success of the Laboratory's Scientific Mission by providing safe and responsive engineering, construction, operations and maintenance of equipment, buildings and infrastructure.
The Electrical Power Department within the Facilities & Operations Division is seeking an Electrician Specialist – High Voltage.
Under general supervision, the Electrician Specialist – High Voltage performs journey level and high voltage electrician work involved with the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of the electrical substations, electrical distribution systems, and general low voltage utility controls.
Assignments can be received in the form of work orders, blueprints, sketches, verbal instructions or employees may be expected to schedule their own work, determine work priorities.
The position will also diagnose problems independently and determine the appropriate method and procedures needed to complete the work.
Working with the team Lead and co-workers, the Electrician Specialist – High Voltage is expected to ensure that the work specifications conform to Facilities and Operation’s Electrical Power Department standards, procedures and policies.
Your specific responsibilities include: Works in areas of controlled access such as substations not open to unqualified individuals.
Works on high voltage power distribution systems 600 Volts AC and above.
Splices and terminates high voltage cables using manufacturer and hand tape methods.
Performs switching and maintenance in substations, switchyards, pad mounted equipment and in underground vaults.
Responds to power outages during off-hours on a call back basis.
Troubleshoots and repair faulty equipment.
Test and repairs short-circuits, grounds and troubleshoots high voltage street light circuits.
Installs new equipment, including conduit, wire, cable, pull boxes, transformers etc for repairs and alterations in high voltage systems.
May be responsible for plans and schematic reviews with written reports to the Systems Manager for his/her review.
May assist the System Manager in overseeing contractors, ensuring safety regulations are being followed.
Coordinates work to ensure the maintenance and integrity of the high voltage system.
Follows Electrical Power Department’s procedures for scheduling system outages.
May work with the Lead person to order materials needed for work.
May provide guidance to other technicians and/or apprenticeship program participants.
Ensures that safety rules are followed.

To be successful in this position you will bring: Completion of recognized apprenticeship program or equivalent education and/or experience for journey level electrician required.
Relevant experience with high voltage equipment (600 AC Volts and above) and low to medium voltage equipment & repair.
Must demonstrate knowledge of high-voltage electrical theory and practices sufficient to plan work independently on power distribution equipment.
Understanding of and willingness to comply with, electrical and work safety procedures including National Electrical Code & CAL-OSHA Standards.
Ability to handle tools of the trade (testing tools, amp meters, recording devices, etc.
) Must be able to read metering schematic, wiring, installation diagrams, etc.
Must be able to troubleshoot and make repairs on faulty equipment and perform new installations of high voltage equipment and electrical systems.
Ability to operate standard and automatic transmission vehicles and high lift truck.
In addition, preferred requirements include: Experience with VLF cable testing and Medium Voltage Breaker testing & troubleshooting and repairs.
Experience with testing Over Current Protective Relays in accordance with manufacturer’s specs while applying NETA Standards.
Certifications and licenses: California State Electrical Certification, preferred.
Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial driver’s license and a good driving record.
Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in CPR and First Aid.

The expected pay range for this position is $52.
13 (Step 1) - $63.
12 (Step 10) per hour.
Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit.
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
