Position Overview
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC), Environmental, Safety & Health (ESH) Division is seeking a Health & Safety Specialist with substantial experience in the continuous development and implementation of the chemical and hazardous waste management technical and safety programs.
Comprehensive knowledge of hazardous materials and waste management regulatory requirements, concepts and practices to ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations is highly valued for this position as well as field experience as an emergency responder to hazardous material and waste incidents and field inspection work.
The successful candidate will provide leadership on ESH issues, assist top management in understanding business impacts of chemical and waste issues thereby enabling prudent allocation of resources and decision-making.
Success in this role is highly dependent on the ability to collaborate and develop great working relationship with various scientific and operational organizations within the laboratory and government agency representatives.
We are seeking a goal-oriented, team player with the desire and ability to effectively work on a small crew or independently in both office and field environments.
The optimal candidate needs be able to multitask, as the position requires the individual to perform various duties on a regular basis.
Your specific responsibilities include: Act as a lead or technical expert, providing functional direction and training in the overall application of the hazardous material and waste programs Develop processes and tools to embed ESH into business operations and scientific programs.
Provide hazardous material and waste support to construction projects, project managers, field construction managers, and field safety professionals to ensure effective implementation of hazardous material and waste programs Under minimal supervision, perform the most complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with SLAC’s environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements.
Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.
Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance review of the hazardous material and waste programs, safety policies and procedures; prepare accompanying management reports, documentation, and evaluations.
Deliver training in support of hazardous material and waste programs to enable successful learning and development across complex and diverse organizations.
Monitor and prevent potential hazards and unsafe conditions that could be present in the work area.
Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place.
Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the hazard potential.
May lead a team responsible for developing and implementing environmental and/or safety programs.
Perform chemical inventory activities, including input, hazard classification, reconciliation, inventory management principles and best practices; chemical labeling, segregation, and storage, including management of time-sensitive chemicals.
Provide technical advice and interpretation of various government regulations and university policies; maintain working knowledge of specific government regulations To be successful in this position you will bring: Bachelor’s degree in science in related allied/scientific field and seven years progressively responsible experience in hazardous material and waste /management, environmental science, emergency response and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledgeable in Chemical inventory activities, including input, hazard classification, reconciliation, inventory management principles and best practices; chemical labeling, segregation, and storage, including management of time-sensitive chemicals.
Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessments, and most complex data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
