SLAC Job Postings Responsibilities: The Accelerator Technologist III - Mechanical works under general supervision and performs assignments of intermediate to advanced complexity in mechanical assembly, sheet metal fabrication, water jet operations and field installations and work across other areas such as machining, vacuum assembly, and/or field installation as needed.
The Technologist III will plan with input from supervisor and senior workers and will conduct a block of work as a complete project, or as a portion of a larger and more diverse project, with strict adherence to site-specific safety requirements as well as work planning and control (WPC) protocols for shop, field, or experimental areas.
The individual must be highly proficient with sheet metal fabrication in all gauges of steel, copper, aluminum, polycarbonate, polyethylene, and other materials, and requires capabilities of cutting, punching, forming, and rolling to tight tolerances and to complex drawings.
The Technologist will work in radiation-controlled areas.
Will communicate and coordinate with line supervision as to effort status, progress, and completion timelines.
Must be able to follow all SLAC safety rules and regulations and identify areas for improvement.
Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.
Qualifications: Minimum 3 years of experience in sheet metal fabrication or have an equivalent combination of vocational school, on the job training and experience.
Ability to operate complex CNC sheet metal equipment for complex assemblies requiring tight tolerances such as a CNC punch and CNC brake.
Ability to operate manual sheet metal equipment like brakes, Strippit, hydraulic rollers, powered metal shearing machines.
Ability to operate waterjet cutting machines and perform routine maintenance on the equipment.
Must be able to read, understand and follow mechanical drawings to assemble, fabricate and install basic mechanical and vacuum assemblies.
Have experience in the operation of cranes, hoists, and forklifts to move large mechanical equipment safely.
Ability to perform, troubleshooting and repair of machine tools and other manufacturing equipment.
(electrical, electronic, or mechanical) Demonstrated ability to repair, assemble, test, and install basic mechanical equipment in shop and field including water and electrical connections and anchoring.
Ability to precisely follow detailed procedures or work instructions.
Able to use manual drill press, band saw, belt sander, and grinding tool.
Able to use manual mills and lathes in the machining of materials.
Able to use hand tools…drills, shears, saws, jacks, mallets, grinders.
Experience in use of precision measuring tools (micrometer, calipers, height gauge) to verify parts conformance to specification.
Able to select and use appropriate hand tools.
Experienced at working independently and as part of a team.
Possess ability to coordinate, plan, and organize tasks.
Demonstrate excellent verbal/written communications skills.
Demonstrated ability to routinely meet production quality and schedule requirements while effectively balancing quality and quantity of work.
Demonstrated understanding of and ability to comply with good shop practices and safety requirements.
Ability to precisely follow detailed procedures or work instructions in a safe and efficient manner.
Ability to demonstrate the understanding of when, how, and where to seek assistance from technical and/or safety experts as well as report up through line management when appropriate.
Must possess a valid California Driver's License and a safe driving record for driving vehicles around SLAC site.
Desired Skills: Working knowledge of mathematics Experience with developing written procedures.
Demonstrated ability to understand and follow cleanroom practices and protocols.
Demonstrated ability in basic precision assembly and understanding UHV managing techniques.
Proficiency with standard office applications including Microsoft office suites.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
