The Position The Installer/Repairer Assistant will help the journey level or lead in installation, repair, and maintenance duties of the water, gas, and wastewater system facilities.
An Installer/Repairer Assistant typically goes through a three-year rotation to achieve journey-level proficiency in all three of these underground utility services with the goal of offering the opportunity to be eligible to participate in the promotional selection process of a Utility Installer/Repairer.

Essential Duties: This position learns to perform all journey-level tasks by assisting with the following duties: Responds to USA mark and locate requests, marking water, gas, and wastewater mains and services in accordance with USA requirements.
Locates water mains and services leaks using maps, pipe locating equipment, and air drills.
Repairs water main leaks using full circle clamps or by removing and replacing a damaged section of pipe.
Replaces galvanized water services with copper pipe.
Repairs service tap blowouts and damaged fire hydrant laterals.
Removes and replaces broken water valves, curb stops, and meter couplings.
Taps into existing water mains for the installation of new water mains, fire hydrants, fire services, valves, and domestic water services.
Installs water meters, noting readings and serial numbers onset cards.
Locates gas main and services leaks using maps, pipe locating equipment, and gas leak detection equipment.
Repairs gas main leaks using stainless steel clamps on steel mains or removing and replacing leaking sections of plastic mains.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through: High school graduate or equivalent training and experience.
One year of experience in construction, preferably in a position working with gas, water, or sewer systems, or experience in maintenance and operation of gas, water, or sewer systems.
Underground construction experience preferred.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California Class B commercial driver's permit with appropriate endorsements required within sixty days of appointment with the ability to obtain license within six months of appointment.

Supplemental Information: Working Conditions / Physical Requirements Travel from site to site; some exposure to dust and noise; some heavy lifting, standing, climbing; may work at heights; work in inclement weather conditions.
