What to Expect
We're looking for an experienced Automation Manufacturing & Process Engineer to join Tesla's team that specializes in advanced automation for supply chains.
This team focuses on automation during a product's development phase.
Mainly focused on developing the automation solutions.
As a crucial member of the team, you will forge strong partnerships with technical teams and External Automation suppliers.
You will also be working closely with the product SIE to work on process set up, PFMEA/CP development, Process Simulation, early phase material flow development and data analysis.
What You’ll Do
Automation and Design Integration:
Lead the integration of the automation line, capable to communicate with cross-functional team on Process, Mechanical design, Electrical design, PLC and control design, IT infrastructure design, SCADA and HMI layer integrations, and facilitated team member communication
Lead automation line buy-off at integrator and ensure the line is ready for PPAP
Support SIE to Ensure Automation project launches to achieve Launch Date, Cost, First Pass Yield, Cycle time, OEE target, Define the process flow, and process controls.
Benchmark and evaluate leading-edge technology including specialized/customized processes (Dispensing, laser welding, test automation, etc.
)
Ensure technical specifications to support project scope, installation, commissioning and maintenance of new automated Processes
Lead the team and work with the Automation vendor to develop and deliver the automation line
Define process input factors requirement, and machine output, set traceability requirement on machine input parameters and output performance
Automation Supplier Management:
Facilitate communication and clarification of technical requirements between the Automation vendor and Tesla
Accountable for automation supplier audits to ensure their ability to meet process performance, equipment delivery, expectations
Guide automation suppliers in developing exceptionally robust processes and procedures to promote efficient and seamless production of high-quality products
Design and Process Recommendations:
Be the key resource in the SIE team responsible for designing, optimizing, and owning the factory layouts, material flow design, line balancing, logistics planning, and industrial analytics
Layout and space readiness initiatives for new line installations, including 2D AutoCAD design and 3D Modeling
High-quality decision support through, primarily but not limited to, Excel analysis, discrete event simulation, and other operations research methods.
Develop Process simulations (simio, flexsim, etc) at RFQ phase to predict throughput and pull ahead
Own and partner on material flow planning, including PFEP, buffer sizing, conveyance automation, site, and space planning
Develop PFEMA/Control Plan during the development phase
CAPEX
Support CAPEX activities: manage project scope, schedule and budget.
Evaluate and justify capital equipment investments.
Implement and monitor approved budgets for projects.
Analyze and justify any deviations from budgets
Lead suppliers and oversee capital improvement projects for plant equipment and machinery.
Set standards and policies for processes, machine control, installation, modification, testing, operation, inspection and maintenance
Develop and implement innovative solutions to complex engineering and manufacturing problems using advanced manufacturing processes and new technology
Define clear requirements to qualify and commission new machines and equipment to meet contract specifications
What You’ll Bring
Master’s degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, or Systems Engineering, or equivalent
3+ years of relevant engineering experience
Skills in DFM, DFA, DFSS, Tolerance analysis, and Monte Carlo simulation
Proficiency in statistical tools (JMP/Minitab) and 3D CAD (CATIA preferred)
Knowledge in APQP, DMAIC, and Lean Six Sigma (Green/Black Belt certification)
Familiarity with Project management software like ThinkCell and MS Project
Experience with Industrial 4.
0 technologies and low-volume, high-mix manufacturing
Understands OEE, capacity planning, and line balancing
Proficient in Data Analysis, Process Control Methods (Statistical Process Control, Cpk) and factory layout planning
Strong communication, GD&T knowledge, and leadership skills
Ability to travel 25 - 30% of the time, sometimes on short notice
Experience in simulation software like Flexsim or Simio
