As a Safety Officer, you will play a vital role in supporting the facilitation of VAPAHCS' Green Environmental Management Program and Green Environmental Management System (GEMS).
You will be responsible for ensuring safety and occupational health across all hospital operations.
Our salary range for this position, based on the market data, is $90k to $115k per year (range varies depending on experience and qualifications).
Key responsibilities: Supervise and/or conduct the collection, transportation, segregation, and manifestation of hazardous wastes/materials Develop, implement, and assess policies and procedures for waste management, renewable energy, recycling, and pollution reduction and prevention Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to convey safety information and procedures to staff Follow and apply OSHA regulations, NFPA Fire Codes, and relevant standards in practical situations.
Maintain and update databases and written/electronic logs and records pertaining to safety and environmental management Ensure proper use of protective clothing and gear in various circumstances Prioritize customer service, treating VA customers courteously, tactfully, and respectfully Safeguard physical keys and electronic cards for secure facility access Conduct quantitative and qualitative respiratory fit testing and provide training on respiratory protection devices Conduct surveys and collect samples to identify hazardous conditions (e.
g.
, noise dosimetry testing, mold surveys, air quality surveys) Evaluate workplaces for potential occupational hazards and implement control measures.
Complete VA-directed training for handling hazardous materials and waste Maintain records and documents related to industrial hygiene and environmental management activities Assist with various safety-related activities under the supervision of a government-provided subject matter expert, including Occupational Safety and Health, Life Safety, Fire Safety, Construction Safety, and Emergency Management Qualifications to be successful in the role: Bachelor’s degree with training, certification, experience, or coursework in Industrial Hygiene CIH certification and/or experience with green environmental management activities highly desirable Ability to perform quantitative and qualitative respiratory fit testing and train individuals on the proper and correct use of respiratory protection devices.
Ability to conduct surveys and collect samples for possible hazardous conditions (e.
g.
, noise dosimetry testing, mold surveys and sampling, air quality surveys, etc.
).
Familiarity with confined space regulations, and air monitoring and procedures for entry into those spaces.
Experience evaluating workplaces for potential occupational hazards and identifying and implementing measures to control those hazards.
Ability to maintain records and documents associated with performing industrial hygiene and environmental management activities.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Proficiency in interpreting and applying OSHA regulations, NFPA Fire Codes, and relevant standards.
Experience with database management and record keeping.
Adaptability to work in challenging environments (cramped, noisy, temperature extremes).
Physical capability to stand, walk, lift items up to 75 pounds, and perform various physical tasks.
Valid California Non-Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain one.
Ability to pass required facility access and background checks.
Competence in using VA inter/intra-net systems.
Adherence to safety protocols and proper protective clothing usage.
Customer-focused demeanor and professionalism.
Security management for physical keys and electronic cards.
Hazardous materials handling training and compliance.
Oversight of hazardous waste collection and management.
Policy development and evaluation in waste management, renewable energy, recycling, and pollution reduction.
