JOB The Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of Public Works Technician I.
Under general supervision, Public Works Technicians perform a variety of routine to journey level sub-professional technical, field, and office civil engineering work in a variety of technical areas, which include Construction Inspection, Drafting, Utility Support, Resource Conservation, Traffic Engineering, Survey, and Technical Support.
The current vacant Public Works Technician I position is in the Traffic Engineering Section.
This is a Departmental Promotional Only recruitment and is open only to current employees in the County of San Mateo Department of Public Works.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to: Assist in preparing channelization, traffic control, and related plans and drawings.
Investigate public complaints regarding traffic conditions.
Maintain and analyze records regarding accidents and traffic incidents.
Collect and maintain records or traffic counts and similar data by placing traffic counters in the field and collecting and recording information.
Conduct radar speed surveys.
Provide customer service to the public and other governmental agencies in person, by phone and/or in writing, regarding County procedures and regulations, facility locations, plan requirements, and property ownership, which may require the interpretation of policies and procedures.
Act as a flagger to provide protection when performing survey work in high traffic areas.
Perform basic on-site material testing; take samples for laboratory materials testing as appropriate.
Obtain and distribute copies of maps, land descriptions, and similar information.
Perform plan reviews and prepare plan review comments.
Write clear and professional letters, reports, and correspondence.
Prepare invoices for billing and payment requests.
Perform administrative duties such as filing, equipment inventory, and research.
Periodically attend public, professional, and technical association meetings.
Provide support to utility staff and information to the public regarding water, wastewater, flood control, and streetlight issues and questions.
The Public Works Technician should have the ability to: Perform well under pressure or stressful situations.
Quickly learn work policies and procedures and adapt to the work environment.
Read and interpret drawings, engineering plans, and regional maps.
Work independently in the field and office and manage workload in an organized manner.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing and work professionally with the public and co-workers.
The Traffic Engineering Section vacancy is located at Grant Yard, 752 Chestnut Street, Redwood City, CA.
The individual chosen for this position will work Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.
m.
to 3:00 p.
m.
PST.

Only current County of San Mateo employees in the Department of Public Works with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, Confidential or Management extra-help/limited term, or SEIU or AFSCME represented extra help/limited term position prior to the final filing date may apply.
