" Our team: The Building Engineering Trades are an integral part of maintaining and improving the core systems of the architectural structures on campus.
These Electric, HVAC and Plumbing shops provide a range of services to academic, research, library and special University facilities which include the following: 24 Hour Emergency Response Routine Maintenance New System Design & Installation Repairs & Alterations to Existing Systems Plumbing: New installations: plumbing fixtures (i.
e.
sinks, water heaters, toilets, etc), piping insulation projects, Maintenance and repair of all campus plumbing systems, Installation and maintenance of safety showers and eye wash stations, Full service drain cleaning and jetter service: ALL types of drains (i.
e.
storm drains, sink drains, gutters/downspouts), Major sewer pipe cleaning and retrofit projects, Lab services: DI water, process piping, domestic water, natural gas, Hydronic heating systems: pumps, piping, Water filtration systems: various types Job Responsibilities Employees in this classification are assigned work by the shop lead or supervisor and carried out following general instructions or more detailed instructions and guidance concerning the best way to perform the work for more complex projects.
Employees in this classification clean, maintain, repair and perform some installation of sewer lines and/or water mains or perform plumbing work requiring the cleaning, clearing, maintenance and repair of sewer and storm drains, grease traps, interceptors and associated plumbing.
Employees in this classification have their work spot-checked during progress and upon completion.
Characteristic Duties Perform plumbing work, including clearing sewer and storm stoppages with cable machines using gas and electric jetters.
Perform maintenance and preventative maintenance on sewers, storm drains, grease traps, interceptors and related plumbing and equipment.
Install and repair storm and sewer piping using clay ABS, plastic, SDR 35, cast iron, PVC, concrete, copper etc.
Install catch basins, sumps and sump pumps, christy boxes etc.
May install or perform minor repairs of piping on water systems.
Repair and or replace faucets, toilets, sinks, etc.
Cut and solder copper piping.
Secure leaks on systems by shutting system valves Adhere to safety rules.
Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in the plumbing trade and the ability to do plumbing work as described above.
Ability to perform plumbing work requiring dexterity and experience of a semi-skilled and skilled nature.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to use, or learn to use, basic equipment of the trade including soldering equipment, wrenches, pipe cutters, tape measure, saw, snap cutters, various power tools, shovels, picks, digging bars, etc.
Ability to operate camel jetter, sewer and storm camera and locators and other specialty equipment.
Ability and willingness to dig when required.
Comfortable using technology, i.
e.
, mobile devices and computers.
Ability to read and interpret AutoCAD drawings.
Some jobs require a California Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
Ability to read and understand the use of tape measures and other estimating and measuring tools.
Minimum Education and Experience Required This skill level is generally associated with a minimum of four years of experience in the trade or a combination of education and relevant experience.
The role may be a trainee position based on the level of experience from the candidate receiving an offer Physical Requirements Ability to obtain and maintain a California Noncommercial Class C Driver’s License.
Must be up to date on Tetanus, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccinations.
Constantly twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.
Frequently stand/walk, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Occasionally kneel/crawl, reach/work above shoulders, light/fine grasping tools, lift/carry/pull/push objects greater than 40 pounds with assistance.
Rarely climb, perform seated work, perform desk based work, use a telephone, sort/file paperwork or parts.
Occasionally operate foot and/or hand controlled equipment.
Operate special machinery i.

mechanical and hydro sewer equipment.
Ability to perform strenuous and repetitive work.
Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs.
Working Conditions Available to work overtime and may be available for callbacks.
May perform work outside in variable weather conditions.
The majority of work performed by water shop employees will be outside in all types of weather.
Ability to work with various smells/odors that come from grease traps, interceptors and other equipment.
May be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, noise >80db, allergens/biohazards/chemicals/asbestos.
May be required to work in confined spaces and at heights greater than 10 feet.
May work in extreme heat and cold temperatures.
May work with lab waste system.
Required to wear appropriate uniform.
The expected pay range for this position is $43.
67 (Step 1) to $52.
81(Step 10) per hour.
Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
