The CTRU is the focal point for research services supporting hundreds of hypothesis-driven research projects and clinical trials across multiple disciplines.

html We are seeking a Lab Services Supervisor to perform laboratory and administrative support duties related to the collection and processing of human samples which principally involve purification and characterization of human biospecimen derivatives, from both biofluids and tissue/tumors for defined research projects and clinical research studies including those from COVID-19 studies in BSL- 2+ certified laboratories.
The candidate will also work with the team to conduct research as needed to develop new SOPs, validate and analyze experimental procedures, and may contribute to the establishment of new procedures in the CTRU lab.
The Supervisor will independently evaluate and expand on the design of clinical research projects.
This will include literature reviews to supplement and execute complex bench work and providing suggestions matched to the requirements of the experimental design.
The CTRU Lab Services Supervisor will oversee laboratory services related to human-derived specimens across all CTRU projects at the Arastradero lab site.
The incumbent will be responsible for management of lab personnel and their schedules to ensure proper coverage across all lab sites.
Along with the Lab Services Manager, the Lab Services Supervisor will be expected to independently evaluate and expand on the design of new clinical research projects, as well as troubleshoot any logistics or deviations to on-going research projects.
Literature reviews may be required to supplement and execute complex bench work and new methodologies for specimen isolations.
Project scopes can vary from the optimization of single-cell isolations from various malignant tissues to novel methods for preserving samples for future metabolome or microbiome research.
Along with the Lab Services Manager, the Lab Services Supervisor is expected to interface and coordinate study design, logistics, and financial requirements with study teams, which often include Stanford faculty and clinical coordinators.
Work will be conducted under supervision of the CTRU Lab Services Manager.
This full-time, benefits-eligible position will be primarily based at our Palo Alto, Arastradero Road site, but may work at another CTRU site occasionally and may require periodic late weekday and/or weekend work.
The appointee must agree to flexibility with working hours based on research and operational requirements.
A heavy emphasis on attention to detail and ability to multitask efficiently and accurately will be required.
The Laboratory Services Supervisor will maintain the laboratory facilities and supervise staff supporting the operations of one or more complex research and teaching facilities.
Apply thorough knowledge of principles, concepts, and methods for assigned area of responsibility.
As an exempt employee, after hours or weekend work may be needed as necessary.
Duties include: • Oversee the operation and management of several active research studies, support clinical faculty and projects which includes study review and assistance with designing lab manuals and laboratory techniques.
• Negotiate and monitor equipment service contracts and warranties with vendors.
• Ensure continuous quality improvement and oversee writing of SOPs for lab and inter lab/core workflows as deemed necessary for compliance and for lab operations as per GCP/GLP.
• Determine equipment needs, authorize purchase of equipment, and oversee installation of equipment and instruments in collaboration with facilities services staff.
• Perform and/or coordinate preventative maintenance and repair of all equipment; determine proper method of repair.
• Oversee layout, allocation, and tracking of space for the lab; manage logistics of laboratory moves; implement plans for renovations of equipment and or/facilities in collaboration with facilities services staff.
• Along with the Lab Services Manager, assist with budgets that include several funding sources for studies.
Manage lab consumables related expenses and staff salary support.
• Administer health and safety programs and ensure safety compliance; act as resource on safety procedures; provide instruction on routine basis; liaise with school and/or university health and safety office as appropriate.
• Direct work of other staff, including supervision, hiring, promotions, and terminations; determine staffing needs, and ensure efficient utilization of staff.
Along with assistance from senior staff, help orient and train new staff or students.
• Support and assist with planning, conducting, and validation of experiments for a range of clinical studies to improve existing SOPs and create new lab SOPs.
• Isolate, express, and purify human cells from whole blood and tissue/tumors.
• Prepare single-cells for analysis via flow cytometry followed by genomic expression analysis (RNA).
• Develop and validate new SOPs for new services including tissue breakdown, genomic extractions.
• Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research.
• Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with faculty investigators and other labs.
• Maintain detailed records of laboratory work and outcomes.
• Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
• Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
