The Department of Pediatrics (DoP) at Stanford University is seeking an Assistant Director of Laboratory Research Development (Laboratory Services Manager 2) to oversee and maintain its laboratory facilities and activities, and supervise staff supporting the operations of several research and teaching facilities of significant complexity.
This position will assist the DoP Director of Laboratory Research Development in overseeing all laboratory operations across 7 buildings (over 50,000 sq ft of space), including the research programs of 51 principal investigators, plus approximately 260 lab staff and trainees, and a total sponsored budget in excess of $45M per year.
The DoP’s laboratory-based research portfolio is a diverse mix of interests and includes usage of a wide variety of techniques, personnel, animal models, equipment, and analytic instrumentation.
This postholder would be expected to apply advanced knowledge of laboratory principles, scientific concepts, and methods for their assigned areas of responsibility, as well as participate in strategic planning and complex budgeting activities.
The post-holder would be expected to be knowledgeable in a wide range of technologies and to be interested in exploring new state-of-the-art platforms which could have wide usability to the department.
They will be expected to interact with and maintain the excellent relationships we have with current vendors and to develop new ones with other providers to suit the emerging needs of our growing faculty.
Duties include: Oversee the operation and management of assigned research and teaching facilities.
Participate in creating strategic plans for future laboratory needs in consultation with faculty and department leadership.
Consult and collaborate with faculty and department leadership to plan and allocate lab space for current and future teaching and research needs.
Plan and facilitate Department’s equipment needs, authorize purchase of equipment including capital improvements, and manage installation, training, and usage of equipment and instruments in collaboration with facilities services staff.
Evaluate and strategically determine equipment upgrade/replacement options and other alternatives in lieu of repair based on latest technological advances and current and future needs.
Negotiate, select, and monitor complex equipment service contracts and warranties with vendors.
Design and implement plans for renovations of equipment and/or facilities; manage complex laboratory moves in collaboration with facilities services staff.
Administer and prepare complex budgets that include multiple funding sources.
Oversee and administer health and safety programs and ensure safety compliance; liaise with school and/or university health and safety office as appropriate.
Direct work of other staff including supervision, hiring, promotions, and terminations; determine staffing needs, and ensure efficient utilization of staff.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
The pay range for this position working in the California Bay area is between $97,000 to $128,000 based on commensurate experience and background.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in a scientific field.
Experience working in an academic lab setting.
Experience working with capital equipment procurement and tracking assets.
Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and requirements for animal work.
Mechanical or technical aptitude with some experience using small hand or power tools.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED): · Understanding of academic research facility needs.
· General background in a discipline related to the work of specific lab(s).
· Demonstrated supervisory experience.
· Demonstrated experience managing multiple large budgets.
· Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research or teaching setting.
· Excellent communication and customer services skills.
· Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a complex and technical environment.
· Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES: None PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*: · Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
· Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
