In autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations.
Additionally, R&DE comprises 900 FTE staff in the following divisions: Student Housing Operations, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Strategic Communications.

” ABOUT MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS & CAPITAL PROJECTS (MCP) This division supports all R&DE operations and provides strong stewardship of its facilities by delivering daily and preventive maintenance, executing 50-year asset renewal model, managing design and construction of capital and other essential projects, infusing sustainability, safeguarding occupational health and safety, monitoring life-safety systems and after-hours security, overseeing furnishings/fixtures and parts inventory, administering move services and the fleet, managing utilities and waste, ensuring emergency preparedness and business continuity, and providing space and property administration.
This role is designated as essential and requires incumbents to report to work onsite.
Telecommuting is not available for this role.
JOB PURPOSE: This job series describes positions in which the major responsibilities are a variety of plumbing duties performed at the journey level, as well as steamfitter work performed inside buildings on medium and low pressure steam and condensate systems.
The duties listed under the Characteristic Duties section are designed to provide a representative sampling of key tasks and/or responsibilities associated with the job.
They are not intended to be a complete list of all the duties performed by employees in the classification.
Responsibilities: Work may include any plumbing function as described in the Uniform Plumbing Code and Uniform Mechanical Code.
Work is done on pipes of various materials, such as brass, steel, cast iron, copper, glass, or plastic, and of various sizes.
In addition, plumber/steamfitters are expected to perform extensive preventive maintenance, as well as to provide emergency response actions when needed in all areas of responsibility.
Duties are assigned by a shop supervisor or lead and are performed with considerable independence.
Work will be spot-checked during an assignment or upon its completion.
A minimum of 30% of an employee's duties must be steamfitter-related responsibilities.
Core Duties (Steamfitting): Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot problems on medium and low pressure steam and condensate systems, including convectors, radiators, coils and heat exchangers, steam tables, sterilizes, autoclaves, traps, automatic and manual valves, strainers, and pumps May perform plumbing-related welding if qualified as a certified welder.
Core Duties (Plumbing): Install, maintain, and repair domestic hot and cold water systems, including heating systems, boilers, hot water tanks, heat exchangers, radiators, valves, and pumps Install and maintain chilled water systems and related equipment, including pumps, valves, regulators, coils and strainers Install, maintain and repair all types of plumbing fixtures, such as faucets, sinks, bathtubs, toilets, water heaters, and garbage disposals Inspect plumbing systems for malfunctions.
Tum systems off safely and make repairs as needed Cut, bend, solder, thread, and assemble pipes and fittings Join pipes by using flanges, fittings, solder, glue, or welding Install, clean, maintain, and repair sanitary sewer lines and storm drainage systems, using hand or power tools Install and repair pipe insulation systems Maintain and repair fire protection sprinkler systems, including pipes and sprinkler heads Install and repair gas lines and related equipment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Qualifications: Must be skilled in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the plumbing trade Must have sufficient training and experience to qualify as a journeyman plumber (approximately five years of work in the trade, including time spent in an apprenticeship or vocational training program) Must also have experience in medium and low pressure steam systems Must have knowledge of the physical properties of steam and condensate and the equipment used in maintaining these systems In addition, plumber/steamfitters may be required to use respiratory equipment and to work in confined spaces or in high elevations.
Education & Experience: Journey level knowledge equivalent to four years of completion in an apprentice program or a combination of equivalent education and work experience.
Four years of actual work in the plumber/steamfitter trade.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Skilled in the use of the tools, equipment and methods of the trade.
• Understanding of complex troubleshooting and repair of plumbing, hydronic, steam systems • Knowledge of the physical properties of steam and condensate and the equipment used in maintaining these systems.
• May be required to use respiratory equipment.
• Thorough knowledge of all types of materials and processes of the trade • Ability to work from plans and specifications • Knowledge of all applicable codes of the trade • Respond to emergency calls nights, weekends, and holidays · Willing to work variable shifts at night or on weekends · Demonstrated strong communication skills (both verbal and written) Certifications and Licenses: · Must possess and maintain a valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license.
· Preferred: Possess a journeyman card in plumbing/steam fitting or other recognized technical credential.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*: · Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C license.
· Must be able to work in confined spaces or in high elevations.
· Constantly twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.

The expected pay for this position is $50.
40 (Step 1) per hour.
Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
